A GEDCOM file cannot contain a computer virus.

GEDCOM is an acronym for "GE"nealogical "D"ata "COM"munication. It provides a standard, uniform format for sharing family information between different computerized genealogical database programs. All genealogy software today can create ("export") and accept ("import") GEDCOM files. The GEDCOM file format is actually only a very structured ASCII text format. Each line consists of three parts: (1) A number indicating connection to other lines; (2) A tag identifying the data on the line; (3) And finally the information.

If you need a genealogy program to convert (or "import") a GEDCOM file into a usable set of data, then check out Kindred Konnections {freeware}, Brother's Keeper {shareware}, or XY Family Tree {freeware} for software that you can download off the Web.

I currently use THE MASTER GENEALOGIST software {$34-$80}. I highly recommend it.

Any of these programs can import a GEDCOM file into its database. The GEDCOM format allows us genealogists to exchange data regardless of which software we use. Great idea, huh?

To speed up download time and save limited computer space at this Web site, each file has been compressed. You will have to "UNZIP" these files after you download them to your hard drive.

This will decompress to "belew.ged" {737,689 bytes}, containing 2,681 individuals who were the descendants (and their spouses) of Renny BELUE Sr., born 1738 in North Carolina; died Dec 1797 in Union Co., South Carolina.

  BORDEN.zip  {222,180 bytes -- created 25 August 1996}

This will decompress to "borden.ged" {1,223,814 bytes}, containing 3,175 individuals who were the ancestors and first 8 generations of descendants (and their spouses) of Richard BORDEN (christened 22 Feb 1595/6 at Headcorn, co. Kent, England; died 25 May 1671 at Portsmouth, RI) and wife Joane (FOWLE) BORDEN (1604-1688).

This will decompress to "bray.ged" {466,256 bytes}, a GEDCOM file containing 1,963 individuals who were the ancestors and descendants (and their spouses) of Henry BRAY, christened 22 Jul 1683, London, England; died 11 Feb 1794 in Chatham Co., NC.

  BROCK.zip  {124,063 bytes -- created 30 September 1997}

This will decompress to "brock.ged" {692,314 bytes}, a GEDCOM file containing 2,994 individuals who were the ancestors and descendants (and their spouses) of Reuben BROCK, born circa 1724 in Ireland; raised a family in Orange County, NC.

This will decompress to "hollcalv.ged" {2,435,055 bytes}, a GEDCOM file containing 10,999 individuals who were the descendants (and their spouses) of John CALVERT, born circa 1525 at Bolton, Yorkshire, England, and/or of Valentine HOLLINGSWORTH, born circa 1632 at county Armagh, Ireland; died 1711 at New Castle County, Pennsylvania (now Delaware).

This will decompress to "domer.ged" {568,268 bytes}, a GEDCOM file containing 2,199 individuals who were among the descendants (and their spouses) of Michael DOMER, Sr., born in 1744 in Germany; died in Holmes or Tuscarawas Co., Ohio, probably in 1830's.

This will decompress to "eaves.ged" {887,694 bytes}, a GEDCOM file containing the 3,236 known descendants (and their spouses) of William EAVES, born circa 1638 at Lyn Haven, Northumberland Co., VA, died 1679/88 in Northumberland Co., VA.

  GASS.zip  {239,232 bytes -- created 17 February 2006}

This will decompress to "gass.ged" {1,313,405 bytes}, a GEDCOM file containing the 5,088 known descendants (and their spouses) of John GASS, died 1734 in Lancaster Co., PA.

  GROVER.zip  {67,072 bytes -- created 6 August 1998}

This will decompress to "grover.ged" {401,856 bytes}, a GEDCOM file containing 1,556 individuals. The file contains ancestors and descendants (and their spouses) of James GROVER, christened at Chesham, England, on 8 November 1607, died December 1685, Middletown, NJ.
The file also contains descendants of Thomas GROVER (buried 26 Jan 1579/80 at Chesham, England) and Edmund GROVER (born circa 1601 at Chesham, England), whose connections to James GROVER are unknown. Descendants of James GROVER's grandson Benjamin BORDEN, II, have been omitted, but are available in "BORDEN.zip" above.

  HANKINS.zip  {89,819 bytes -- created 21 January 2000}

This will decompress to "hankins.ged" {508,423 bytes}, a GEDCOM file containing 1,907 individuals who are known descendants (and their spouses) of Wright HANKINS (born 1790's; died 1840's) and his wife Arminta TALLANT (born circa 1800, probably Anson Co., NC; died 1850's, Craighead Co., AR).

  HARLAN.zip  {198KB -- created 22 Mar 2002}

This will decompress to "harlan.ged" {1,142KB}, a GEDCOM file containing 4,395 individuals who were among the descendants (and their spouses) of the grandfather of George HARLAN(D), who came to America in 1687, (christened 11 Mar 1650, nigh Durham in Bishoprick, county Durham, England; died Jul 1714, Old Kennet, Chester Co., PA) and wife Elizabeth DUCK (born 5 May 1660, poss. Lurgan, Shankill Parish, county Armagh, Ireland; died before 1714, Pennsbury Twp., Chester Co., PA).

The file includes all known descendants of Samuel and Mary (BANCROFT) HEALD, who came to America in 1703.
